Computing Requirements of Modern Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound Machines
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ultrasound is one of the leading medical imaging modalities because it is safe, noninvasive, portable, easy to use, relatively inexpensive and displays images in real-time. Due to its real-time nature, an ultrasound machine must be able to process its incoming data quickly. High computational and throughput requirements in modern ultrasound machines have restricted their internal design to algorithm-speci®c hardware with limited programmability. Adding new ultrasound imaging applications or improving a machine's internal algorithms can require costly hardware redesigns and replacements of boards or of the entire machine. In an eort to address these problems, we have reviewed each of the essential functions in modern ultrasound machines and analyzed their computational requirements in programmable systems. These functions include dynamic downconversion, tissue signal processing, color ̄ow processing, scan conversion, and tissue/ ̄ow decision. Our estimate of the total computing requirement to current ultrasound machines is 54.71 billion operations per second (BOPS) when transcendental functions are implemented in software and 31.26 BOPS when transcendental functions are implemented in lookup tables taking 160.26 Mbytes of memory. To investigate the feasibility of programmable generalized ultrasound systems, we have designed a ̄exible and parallel programmable ultrasound processing subsystem, called the Programmable Ultrasound Image Processor (PUIP). As the need for programmable ultrasound machines increases in the future due to various advantages (e.g., lower system cost, faster clinical use and lower research/development expenses), it will be crucial to develop not only a high-performance, scalable, recon®gurable parallel computer architecture meeting the computing requirement, but also ecient ultrasound algorithms that can be optimally mapped into the parallel architecture. Since the introduction of medical ultrasound in the 1950s, modern diagnostic ultrasound has progressed to see many major diagnostic tools come into widespread clinical use, such as B-mode imaging, color-flow imaging, and spectral Doppler. New applications, such as panoramic imaging, three-dimensional imaging, and quantitative imaging, are now beginning to be offered on some commercial ultrasoun...
متن کاملBiological Effect of Modern Fetal Ultrasound Techniques on Human Dermal Fibroblast Cells
Background: Diagnostic ultrasound has been used to detect human disease especially fetus abnormalities in recent decades. Although the harmful effects of diagnostic ultrasound on human have not been established so far, several researchers showed it has had bioeffects in cell lines and in experimental animals. Three-dimensional (3D), four-dimensional (4D), and color Doppler sonography are new te...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Quality Control Program for Diagnostic Radiography and Fluoroscopy Devices in Syria during 2005-2013
Introduction: Extensive use of diagnostic radiology is the largest contributor to total population radiation doses. Thus, appropriate equipment and safe practice are necessary for good-quality images with optimal doses. This study aimed to perform quality control (QC) audit for radiography and fluoroscopy devices owned by private sector in Syria (2005-2013) to verify compliance of performance o...
متن کاملSoftware-based Ultrasound Beamforming on Multi-core DSPs
Ultrasound imaging is an important diagnostic tool in clinical medicine. It displays images in real time and is considered safe, noninvasive and less costly than other cross-sectional imaging modalities, e.g., X-ray CT, MRI and PET. In modern ultrasound machines, digital beamforming (focusing) is widely used. It is essential for attaining good image quality by increasing signal-tonoise ratio (S...
